Fullness of Existence in His Mission and Purpose

We are living in a modern world that has been caught up in the commodification of everything, even including ourselves. Everything is measured by numbers and values, as if there is no other meaning that can define one's existence. It is only natural that many people end up thinking that they have to be "something" and extraordinary in order to be appreciated and recognised by others and their communities. The process of self-validation as an integral part of one's emotional development turns into an existential trap. The thirst for validation is insatiable. Many people begin to turn into inauthentic individuals. They seek validation through power, position, possessions, and even religion. At some point, a person will feel very tired and trapped in an endless cycle of seeking validation.

In the midst of this phenomenon, let us remember and look at Christ who set an example to mankind. One of them is through the event of Jesus entering Jerusalem and being hailed. In the liturgical tradition of the church, this moment is commemorated as Palm Sunday. After travelling around to teach and proclaim the Kingdom of God. Jesus finally entered Jerusalem. The religious centre of the Jews at that time. When Jesus entered the city, the people were preparing for Passover. He entered as the prophecies of the Messiah were revealed by the prophets. Like a king returning to his city after winning a war, this was the atmosphere that was to be established. However, this true King did not ride a gallant war horse, but a donkey. There is no sense of majesty, but rather modesty. Donkeys are animals that are close to the people in general because they are affordable and widely used to support daily needs. From trade to agriculture. Jesus was the King, but unlike the kings of that time who ruled through violence and ruled with an iron fist, He ruled with gentleness. He brought not violence but eternal peace in His Kingdom.

Jesus had the capacity to exalt Himself. He was the Son of God. But he left it all behind. As Philippians states, the Son of God emptied himself and took the form of a servant. Yes, a servant so lowly. Giving up His own life for the salvation of the world. Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem to meet His suffering, passion, and eventual death. When the people of the city saw Jesus, they spread their clothes and tree branches in his path, and applauded him. Jesus was not absorbed in praise and self-glorification. He did not need or seek validation. The Son of God remained faithful to His mission. Jesus knew His purpose and calling in life which was centred and directed towards the Father. Beyond that, there was nothing else he was looking for. Whether it was power, position, or even material possessions.

For us today, Palm Sunday also teaches us to focus on God's purpose and will for us. Avoiding the thirst for validation is achieved when we discover that sufficiency for all things comes not from things outside of us, but from God who resides in each of our hearts. When this self is sufficient, then the focus of our lives can be directed towards the realisation of the values of the Kingdom of God. Palm Sunday is about the process of discerning the inner self that should be content with the mere existence of Christ. Then we don't need to be trapped anymore in the vicious circle of endless search for validation.

Reflective question: Have we lived our existence based on the purpose and will of God ordained for us?
