Just food? What about drinks?

There is a question from a reader of the New Translation of the Bible. In the ‘Lord’s Prayer’ found in Matthew 6:9–13, it is written:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name; Your kingdom come; Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

My question is, why does it only mention food? What about drink?

Answer:

In the process of translating the Bible, the Indonesian Bible Society (LAI) uses the Hebrew source text for the Old Testament and the Greek source text for the New Testament. The source text in Matthew 6:11 does indeed only mention food. The text in the original language reads: “Give us this day our daily bread”.

Therefore, the LAI translation is consistent with the source text. In accordance with institutional policy, we have deliberately limited our response to matters of translation.

Furthermore, to find an answer to your question “Why is drink not mentioned?”, we suggest that you read the commentaries available in Christian bookshops. However, we believe that what the Lord Jesus meant by ‘bread’ is both food and drink.
