Affirming the Meaning of Life

The strength to live life can come from various things. One of them is by finding the meaning of life and the true appreciation of the purpose of our existence in the world. In our eyes as believers, all of these answers lie in our relationship with God the Creator and Savior. However, there are times when the meaning of life is lost when hit by a storm of such great problems. This is the challenge that we must answer.

In Job 6:11-12, it appears that Job is making a very deep consideration and thought. Is his life still meaningful or not? Can he survive physically and mentally in the midst of all his struggles? What is his strength so that he is still able to survive? The word strength in this verse is identical to the source or power of life that enables a person to survive and continue to live life well. In the book of Psalms, for example, the psalmist often complains of "strength that is exhausted or dry" as a description of this life force. This series of questions inevitably leads to the next contemplation, namely whether there is still a future for him when the present feels so heavy and difficult. He moved from his increasingly weak and fragile body condition, unlike stone and bronze which are symbols of strength (v. 12).

Job then expressed that there was no more help for him and God's salvation felt so far away. Was there still hope to overcome all these sufferings? In fact, there were no more friends and companions who could truly understand him. Job had friends but they misunderstood him. For Job, as expressed in verse 14, refusing to help a friend in need meant not accepting the task that God had given, because he did not respect God's attention and faithful love for his suffering friends. From here we see that Job often asked God questions related to his existence as a person who had done nothing wrong to God but received such great suffering, but he never lost his faith in God.

The existence of his friends was like a wadi, a seasonal river that flowed rapidly in the spring when the ice and snow melted and dried up at the end of summer. He expected fresh water like faithful love, but did not get it. Job's friends were like the wadi that only came seasonally and could not be fully relied on. Suffering and living in solitude and being misunderstood by his friends. It is understandable if he loses the meaning of his life. But in the end Job still chooses to continue living his life even though all the questions arise violently and often like a spark of conflict with God. Even so, Job never once loses his faith in God. May all the suffering, challenges, and struggles that we face never distance us from Him. We can still interpret our lives as a gift from God. Struggles may come and go, but faith in Him is what makes us strong. In such conditions, asking questions is natural. It is not a sign of unbelief, but rather born from the awareness that only to God can we ask. God is the source of answers and the meaning of our lives.
