As followers of Christ, we realize that the path we must take is not easy. Sometimes in the struggle to follow His will, various sufferings come into our lives. Meanwhile, at the same time, we see those who are far from His will actually experiencing such a good life. Slowly, our hearts cry out and ask about God's intention behind this reality.
The cry of the heart wrapped in questions of faith is also expressed through our reading this time. The psalmist complains to his God. He finds it so hard to follow the Lord in all His will. He avoided mistakes and sins, but plagues and punishments were part of his daily life. He wanted to understand this hard reality, but the psalmist could not find the answer. Meanwhile, the wicked seemed untouched.
What the psalmist expresses is not an unfamiliar tradition in the Old Testament. Job, for example, is also described as having similar anxieties. Our reading shows that although the question comes from the psalmist, it is not a sign of his unbelief. Verses 16-28 instead reveal a firm belief in God. What he experienced strengthened his love for God. He expressed his preference to be close to God. Whatever happens, God will surely reveal His justice because He is the true refuge.
Friends of the Bible, faith in God is a living faith. The process of faith involves all the dynamics experienced by humans. So questions, doubts and even sorrows are still valuable in His presence. Asking God for all our worries is not wrong, it is unfortunate to stop trusting Him. Ultimately in the questions of faith there is a firm belief that He is the only one who is sovereign and will help us.
