The relationship between man and God and man and his neighbour is something that is at the core of a Christian's faith and religiosity. So there is a dynamic created in the relationship and even a two-way need that must be considered. God as the infinite is willing to be the Lord of man as long as man builds a sincere relationship with Him and obeys His will. So what if man is the one who does not fulfil His role and covenant in the relationship?
This is the condition of Israel described in Isaiah chapter 1 as the Prophet Isaiah gives an introduction to his vision. Israel was like a child rebelling against its parents. Even an ox knows its owner, but Israel is like a donkey that doesn't know its master. What is the reason for this title? Apparently Israel had done what was evil in God's eyes. They forsook God by their evil deeds. As a result Israel had to swallow the consequences of their actions. The land became empty and destroyed. It was like Sodom and Gomorrah receiving God's judgement.
Another criticism by God was that their worship was "empty". Ritually and religiously, Israel may have been fulfilling God's decrees such as burnt offerings, religious festivals, and prayers. However, they neglected other important things such as justice, kindness, and love for one another. This confirms that what God wants is not meaningless rituals, but a religious life that is balanced with a true ethical appreciation. Isn't this what is also often seen in our country. Houses of worship are full but unfortunately news of corruption is just as prevalent on our timelines.
