A cyclist knows that the route they are about to take is unlikely to consist solely of flat roads or gentle descents. At times, they must face gruelling uphill climbs or winding, twisting roads that demand balance and intense focus. Indeed, it is often the sense of achievement after navigating those twists and turns that makes cycling all the more enjoyable. Is not our life much the same? Life is always full of twists and turns. A journey that is often not easy, yet it is often there that our personal growth lies—namely, when we strive to navigate it as best we can. It is in this realisation that we are certain that it is God who shapes us. 

That, in essence, is the message conveyed by God through the prophecy of the Prophet Jeremiah in today’s passage. Our passage opens with an unusual scene. God commanded Jeremiah to visit the house of a potter; evidently, God wished to stimulate Jeremiah’s senses and guide his process of formulating an experience—namely, observing the potter at work. Whilst Jeremiah was observing the potter, God revealed His purpose. It seems He personifies Himself as a potter in His relationship with His people.  

God is the Potter, whilst Israel is the clay in the craftsman’s hands; He said, “Truly, just as clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel! (v. 6)” Before becoming a beautiful vessel, a lump of clay must undergo a long process in the potter’s hands. It is not uncommon for him to have to repeatedly break down and reshape the clay in his hands. If the vessel is damaged, the potter will reshape it into another vessel as he sees fit; thus, so shall God treat His people. Time and again, we are shaped and moulded according to what He deems best. If we submit to the Potter’s process of shaping, He will lead us towards beauty. Unfortunately, throughout history, Israel—that lump of clay—has often rebelled against the Potter. Fortunately, the Potter is a patient One who grants that clay many opportunities. 

Dear Friends of the Bible, are we not also a lump of clay before Almighty God? Surrender to His process and His discipline. The life He has bestowed upon us is the path through which we are shaped to become ever more beautiful and to glorify His name. Be patient, for this shaping process is not always pleasant; it often feels painful and burdensome. Yet trust that behind it all lies God’s love, which weaves and brings beauty in His own time.
