August 8, 1958, is a historic date for the establishment of the LAI Representative Office in Medan. Before becoming a Representative Office, the promotion and distribution activities of the Bible and its parts in this area were limited to the local church, namely the Indonesian Christian Church in North Sumatra (GKI Sumut). Initially, it was through the initiative of several missionary pastors assigned to GKI Sumut, particularly Rev. Kervinus, by providing Bibles and parts to serve the needs of congregation members. At that time, the activity was centered in the parsonage room behind the GKI Sumut church. However, due to the increasing demand for Bibles and parts, especially from outside GKI Sumut, such as congregations in Tapanuli, Simalungun, and Karo, Rev. Kervinus felt it necessary to establish an office.
To that end, he contacted the LAI leadership in Jakarta to support funds in building an office building. This request was granted, and after construction was completed, the building became the LAI Representative Office in Medan, located on Jalan Soetomo (note: the original location of the LAI Medan Representative Office, before moving to Jl. Setia Budi, Medan). At that time, under the leadership of Rev. N.W. van den Bent as the first Head of the LAI Medan Representative Office, and assisted by Johannes Sitepoe, Petrus Surbakti, and Gerhard Simarmata, the promotion and distribution of Bibles and parts for the North Sumatra region were carried out in a more organized and comprehensive manner.
Currently, the LAI Representative Office in Medan has expanded its reach further across Sumatra Island to serve Christian congregations in providing Bibles and parts, excluding Bengkulu, Bangka-Belitung, and South Sumatra. According to population data issued by the Central Bureau of Statistics (1993), the Christian population in D.I. Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, and Jambi amounts to 3,685,974. This population serves as the primary target for the LAI Representative Office in Medan to spread the Bible and its parts in this area. Apart from the population, the cultural and linguistic diversity that characterizes the region is viewed as a potential that can be developed by the LAI Medan Representative Office, especially in monitoring the need for regional language Bibles for local churches. The LAI Representative Office in Medan is also tasked with disseminating the vision, mission, and programs that need support from the Christian community. Through these roles, it is hoped that the LAI Representative Office in Medan can represent the face of LAI in Swarnadwipa. Since June 20, 2012, the Indonesian Bible Society representative office in Medan moved from Jl. Soetomo No. 618 to a new building located at Jl. Setiabudi No. 463 A-B, Tanjung Sari, Medan.
