Strong Roots, Strong Growth: Children's Jamboree at Bumi Cendrawasih

On June 28 to July 1, 2024, the Jayapura representative of the Indonesian Bible Institute (LAI) successfully organized a Children's Jamboree at Rindam XII/Cenderawasih, Ifar Gunung, Sentani. The event was attended by 240 children from various churches in Jayapura and surrounding areas, including the Evangelical Christian Church in Tanah Papua, Oikumene Christian Church, and Bethel Indonesia Church.

The location of Ifar Gunung, which is currently used as the headquarters of the Regional Military Regiment (Rindam) of Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih, offers a cool atmosphere in the morning to afternoon, and cold at night. This place has high historical value, as it was once the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur during the Pacific War. The presence of children in this history-laden place is an important part of the effort to teach history and nationalism values to the younger generation.

The theme of this year's Children's Jamboree was “Kitong Rooted and Growing with the Bible,” which emphasized the importance of children to explore the love and stories in the Bible and to know the local culture. In his speech, committee chairman Drs. Elia Loupatty, MM, emphasized that children are effective "transmission agents" in spreading positive values. He hoped that this event could improve children's faith, character, and cultural understanding, considering that Papua is a region rich in natural resources and diverse cultures.

The jamboree activities were not only conducted indoors, but also outdoors to develop participants' innovation and creativity. One of the unique approaches used was to combine children in groups regardless of their church origin, thus creating a harmonious and creative fellowship. In each session, children are invited to actively participate, both in discussions and practical activities such as lectures, group discussions, and outdoor activities.

The materials presented during the event covered a wide range of topics, from understanding the content of the Bible to social issues relevant to young people, such as the use of cell phones for positive purposes. In addition, there are also field activities that include educational tours, which allow children to learn while being recreational.

The Rev. Henky Liemena, one of the resource persons, praised the implementation of this event despite the short period of time. According to him, the presence of children from four provinces is an extraordinary achievement. "This simple but meaningful event not only builds spirituality, but also intellectual and physical endurance. The committee, which is small but works wonderfully, managed to package this event well," said Rev. Henky.

One of the things that caught the attention of the participants was the use of the "Object Lesson" method in delivering the material. This method helps children understand abstract concepts in a concrete and visual way. As a result, the children were not bored, but rather active and eager to participate in each session.

This Children's Jamboree event is clear evidence that even with limited resources, a meaningful activity can be organized well. The children who attended not only gained new knowledge, but also valuable experiences that will shape their character and personality in the future. With all the activities designed, this event successfully provided inspiration and new hope for the young generation of Papua.(perlando)
