Hope in the Silence

Søren Kierkegaard, a Danish philosopher once said that when a human being lives his real life, he is thrown into a mysterious existence. So for Kierkegaard, to be able to exist well, a leap of faith is needed which he describes as the courage to "walk in the dark," choosing to believe even though the future is filled with ignorance and sheer absurdity. Job shows the same action. He questions his existence and what his function is in the world in the great suffering he experiences. Repeatedly he longs for the world of the dead which he sees as much more peaceful. However, Job does not lose hope even when he questions God's decision regarding what he experiences. Job chooses to walk in faith relying on God who never leaves him.

Job rejects the illusion of false hope, but he still does not give up on the emptiness of values and purpose in life. This is a form of honest hope, not one that relies on results, but on the courage to continue to believe even though it is like walking in the dark. In honesty he says, "So where is my hope? Who sees hope for me?" (Job 17:15). This kind of hope is not shallow optimism, but rather a way of experiencing one's existence in the world with full honesty towards all situations faced. If many people choose to deny their suffering and live in a false utopia, Job chose to accept all realities while having a dialogue with God.

Bible friends, the crisis point of our lives is when various kinds of suffering and struggles come one after another. In that situation we usually ask Him questions: why am I sick? Why do good people suffer? Why does justice feel slow? And so on. However, Job teaches that true faith is not always accompanied by answers. Sometimes, we have to be strong enough to stay in the question—and that is not weakness, but the highest form of trust. So the real hope is always there. In all our unanswered questions to Him. God is always present and walks with us when facing various sufferings that come. That hope makes us survive, even though it seems hidden.

So, today, we are invited to do the same. Embrace silence without giving up. Hold onto hope, even though it is faint. Living faith, not with answers, but with courage.
