It seems like more and more people are feeling pessimistic about life these days. This inner situation is triggered by the increasingly chaotic world conditions that are far from ideal. The economic crisis, high unemployment, wars in various parts of the world, to the leaders of the country who do not carry out their duties and responsibilities properly. Not to mention the various personal struggles that pressurize life. So when it all happens, our minds ask hopefully, who will be our guide and support? Perhaps a deep contemplation of our current readings will help to answer that question.

The Psalmist begins his verse with an emphatic statement that God is a refuge and strength. There is no need to doubt His presence as a helper in all our troubles. The description of God's protection is expressed with the metaphor that God is our fortress city. Just as fortresses were built in those days to protect all the inhabitants of the city, so God will protect His people.

If God is our fortress city then no adversity will hinder His love. Look around and you will find how He has already begun His work. Warfare as the symbol of chaos on earth has been stopped. Bows and spears no longer serve to harm fellow human beings (verse 10).  This poem is an encouraging message. Unlike man-made fortress cities that still have limitations, God the Fortress City transcends all that exists. As such, His protection and steadfast love are also limitless.

Friends of the Bible, life can be tough at times but always remember God's steadfast love. Look around us and see that God never stops working with His hands. As the psalmist testifies to God's protection that is as strong as a fortress city, so we are invited to appreciate His strength and protection. So let's keep our hope in Him because only the Lord is able to overcome all things.
