Through God-given intellect, humans are given the ability to organise and manage their lives. One dimension that is included in the realm of such arrangements is the financial aspect of a person. In the Christian faith, we realise that possessions and wealth are not the end goal of life but rather a means to something greater such as glorifying His name.
Therefore in the guidance of wisdom, matters related to possessions and wealth are also not spared as a subject of instruction. In our current reading it is shown that the most important thing in a man's life that can be said to be his treasure is wisdom itself. The beautiful treasures (jewellery) and the oil representing the precious things at hand will be guarded according to one's wisdom. An ignorant person, however, does not have good organisation and will waste them.
The choice of lifestyle is also crucial. People who are not good at managing their desires and squandering their possessions will be in need. Meanwhile, those who are too fixated on material possessions will also not find peace, because material possessions have turned into an end rather than a means to honour Him. So first of all, focus on wisdom, so that in that wisdom we gain the knowledge to manage the various aspects of life according to His will.
Friends of the Bible, this advice in Proverbs is very useful in the context of modern life which is often cloaked in the sweet temptation of hedonism. We are encouraged to spend as much as we can in the name of needs created by the market mechanism. Even though if we think about it further, we don't really need it. Thus, the role of wisdom in the mechanism of regulating each person's financial life is to provide awareness of responsibility and restraint of unnecessary desires. Live with this in mind, and a responsible life becomes the pathway to a happy life.
