A paradox that often arises in our lives is that we humans, who are said to be rational beings, are often led astray by our own logic and end up abandoning what is truly valuable. We seek self-validation in power, wealth and position, when in fact validation lies in a whole and meaningful relationship with the Creator and with those who truly and sincerely love us. We try to satisfy our desires in various ways, yet all of it is mere futility that will come to an end when we dare to say ‘enough’. 

This is what happened to Israel. God was so astonished at Israel. In the beginning, a close and intimate relationship existed between God and Israel. Like a couple on their honeymoon, they could see all manner of beauty through their love for one another. Yet Israel so easily abandoned God, captivated by other gods who, in truth, could do nothing. In a bitter tone, God said, “Has any nation ever exchanged its gods, even though those gods were not God? Yet my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless gods (v. 11).” 

Ultimately, Israel fell into the void of existence. It was meant to be the chosen nation that would bring God’s blessing to all nations and lead the nations to God. Like a tree that channels life to the living creatures around it. Yet now Israel has lost its connection with the Source of Living Water because of its own behaviour. They have abandoned the Source of Water and built a leaky cistern that cannot hold water.  This leaky cistern symbolises Israel’s existence, which is directed towards the worship of something empty and meaningless. 

Dear Friends of the Bible, let us reaffirm the focus of our lives. Let us not be distracted by illusory things that merely appear to offer relief. It is in God alone that the true fulfilment of our existence lies. He is the Source of Water who gives true life; therefore, a severed relationship with God means the end of true life. Let us nurture our relationship with God, the Source of Life.
