The need to be loved is a fundamental need for every human being. Thinkers of the past even went so far as to say that love is the foundation of a person’s existence. It is through this experience of love that a person is enabled to love and to forge their path in the world. Is this not a vital realisation in a world full of hatred? 

The people of Judah were mired in suffering and sorrow that seemed to have no end. It was in the midst of this despair that news of restoration and the message of God’s love arrived. God began His message of love by reaffirming that He would be the God of the entire house of Israel and that they would be His people for ever (v. 1). This formulation is similar to the covenant formula repeatedly established between God and the forefathers of Israel. It appears that despite all the rebellions committed by Israel, God did not revoke their status as His people. 

The covenant is sealed with an everlasting love that is the very essence of God. He says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you (v. 3).” The love that God expresses is a faithful love that is committed and unshaken by circumstances. Imagine, in the midst of such despair, the people of Israel being able to hear God’s soothing expression of love, which builds hope. 

Dear Bible Friends, perhaps some of us are currently struggling to cope with a variety of difficulties and trials. Time and again, the thought of giving up on this struggle crosses our minds. Indeed, God’s message of love above is for all of us who are struggling to face this life, which is often far from easy. Keep moving forward and look to the future, for God is our only source of help. In His love, He is present and always with us. No matter how difficult life may be, keep fighting in His love.
