Personal closeness between us and others is something that must be pursued by both parties. If only one party takes the initiative to build and maintain the relationship, then the effort will not go well. Likewise, the relationship built between humans and God.
The writer of Hebrews seems to know his readers very well personally, this can be seen through the use of personal pronouns with "we" and "us" which seem more personal. As if this letter was prepared specifically for a particular local congregation. In several parts of the letter, the writer reveals the conditions of the congregation who are likely Jewish. For example, in Hebrews 10:32-34, it is revealed the condition of the congregation who suffered from being insulted, receiving arbitrary treatment, and having their property confiscated. In such a situation, the writer conveys his message so that the congregation who already believe do not waste the gift of salvation that God has given through Jesus Christ (Hebrews. 2:3-4).
The letter to the Hebrews begins with a statement about God always looking for ways to draw closer to humans. In the past, God spoke through prophets in various ways that humans could understand. Using various languages and methods according to the context of the times, for example, when speaking to Moses, He used the medium of a burning bush (Exodus 3). When speaking to Elijah, He delivered His message through a soft blowing sound (1 Kings 19: 12). He prophesied to Isaiah through a heavenly vision (Isaiah 6), to Hosea through his family crisis (Hosea 1: 2), and to Amos through a rather unique vision, namely a basket filled with ripe fruit (Amos 8: 1). All of these efforts were made because of His desire to establish an intimate relationship with the people. However, as we know, all of these efforts were not always well received, until finally He took the initiative to appear in human form, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is a representation of God Himself, unlike the previous prophets who had the role of bringing messages or the word of God, Jesus is the Word itself. He has the power and strength that can unite and support all creation. The idea behind the word ‘sustain’ is best understood as ‘maintaining’, not passively holding something back, but actively sustaining. In His earthly ministry, Jesus continually demonstrated the power of His word that is so powerful that it can sustain all things. Just like the Word of God at the creation of the world (Genesis 1), the Word of Jesus also has unlimited divine authority, which can create, sustain, and give life.
Bible friends, do we realize how much God desires a close relationship with us? Through His only Son, God reveals the deepest evidence of His love. However, God’s outstretched love will be in vain if we do not welcome it with full awareness. Let us accept and believe in God’s gift in Christ while realizing an intimate relationship with Him.
