Like creating a beautiful mosaic, each small piece plays an important role in completing the overall picture. Although it may seem simple, without the contribution of each part, the mosaic would lose its integrity. Likewise in the life of faith, service to God requires cooperation, dedication, and enthusiasm from everyone, regardless of their background and role. Our reading today, Nehemiah 3:21-32, shows the collective spirit in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. Each individual and group took responsibility for repairing the section assigned to them, both in front of their own homes and in places farther away from their territory.
Meremoth, son of Uriah, along with the priests, people from the Jordan Valley, repaired a section of the wall near the house of the priest Eliashib. This shows that even the priests, who had religious duties, were not reluctant to get involved in physical work. They understood that service to God was not limited to the altar or rituals, but also included a collective effort in building up God’s people as a whole. Binnui, son of Henadad, and Pedaiah, son of Parosh, also set an extraordinary example. They not only repaired the walls around their homes, but also parts far from their homes. They carried out selfless devotion and the awareness that God's work was a shared responsibility. Every name and group mentioned is evidence that everyone played their part faithfully. No one was considered higher or lower. There was no place for egoism or personal interests. Everyone, whether priests, merchants, or ordinary people, was called to take part according to their abilities.
Bible friends, the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem went beyond just a physical task. This construction was a symbol of the spiritual development of God's people. In addition, we are also shown that this work could not be completed by one person alone, meaning that every member of the community had a role to play. No role is too small or too big in serving God. Let our every step, our every effort, be part of a beautiful mosaic for His glory.
