Conceit is a sin that stalks people closely. It is easy to fall into pride especially when we feel great, more than others, and have everything. To some extent, this pride becomes so extreme. We feel that we can do everything without anyone's help. If success comes then the biggest share is on us, not others or even God. The center of the world turns into ourselves, even though He invites us to make Him the center of our entire lives.
Psalm 2:1-12 demonstrates the above statement very dramatically. Verses 1-3 are a picture of the pride and stubbornness of the human heart that usually afflicts kings. In those days, kings were treated very special and in some traditions, they were positioned as divine descendants with absolute orders that must be obeyed by everyone. In such a perspective it is very easy for a person to exalt himself even to the point of going against the Creator. Similarly, nations fight amongst themselves to determine the best amongst them.
Seeing this phenomenon, the King of the Universe could only laugh and even mock in the sense of being concerned about the futility of their trying to fight Him. God emphasized that He alone chose and assigned the man whom He had favored. It is to him that all the princes and kings of the earth will bow the knee. Who this person is is not the main focus, but rather who sent him is what is to be emphasized, namely God Himself. Therefore, kings, judges, or people who have an important role in decision-making, are invited to reflect. They should be wise in their daily lives and duties. Wisdom is seen in the sincere acknowledgment of His existence and submission to God alone.
Friends of the Bible, in God's relationship with His creation, pride has no place. So we are invited to reflect on our own lives. With all the blessings He has given us, have we become humble individuals or have we turned our backs on God and feel that everything happened because of our own efforts? Repent and live your life in the recognition that God alone is the owner of all things who is far more powerful than anyone else.
