Often our conscience is troubled by the realities of everyday life. Crime and injustice happen everywhere, but the rewards or consequences for the perpetrators are often inversely proportional to the phenomena that occur. Those who blatantly commit injustice actually get a comfortable and good life, as if they are far away from all dangers.
As believers who are invited by God to live in truth, we eventually realize that true justice comes only from the One who is Just.
Similar anguish is also displayed in the passage we look at this time. The psalmist appeals to God for help and protection. Their presence is threatening and intimidating, like a lion about to pounce and tear its prey.
This petition to God is based on his being a righteous man who is obedient to His will. The psalmist shows that he has never done anything evil in the sight of God (verse 4 & 6). If he had done even a little evil, then God would have judged him. However, he did not, so God's defense should be a necessity.
The Psalmist invites us all to realize God's nature not only as a loving God but also as a just God. He calls for the establishment of God's justice that overcomes all the nations of the world.
In the presence of God, the wicked will eventually come to an end, while the righteous will be established by Him (verse 10). In that conviction, the psalmist invites us to internalize the portrayal of God as the Shield that protects us from the bad things that happen. That protection is based on His great wisdom and judgment because He is the Righteous Judge (verse 12).
Bible Friends, as His people, our sensitivity to the injustices happening around us should be heightened. The One we worship is a just God, which invites us to be people who strive for righteousness and justice.
Let's believe that ultimately God is a God of justice and takes a firm stand against unrighteousness. Our duty is to stand firmly in His path and not join the world's misleading currents, especially when the world persuades us to justify, normalize, and even forget oppression and unjust treatment of others.
The God we know is a God who remembers and knows the intricacies of His creation. Unlike us, who in the name of comfort and security, are often tempted to deny and forget the tragedies and crimes that may have occurred around us.
