Maybe we've asked, how does God show His love in this life of hurt, injustice and emptiness? Today's psalm shows us that God's love does not always come in the form of great miracles, but rather in ways that shape the heart and stir the conscience. God loves by teaching us to keep our tongues from lying, stay away from evil, and pursue peace. He not only gives, He also molds, for true love is love that leads to righteous living.
God's love is also seen in His concrete attention, "The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and His ears upon their cry for help." He is not a distant spectator, but a Friend who is close to us. Thus He recognizes the broken heart. Even when life leaves us almost broken, God protects our bones, holds our tears, and is present in our inner silence. His love is not an instant pain reliever, but a sustaining force in the midst of suffering.
Friends of the Bible, the experience of being loved by God, especially when we are at our lowest, actually evokes a sense of security and healthy self-identity. This psalm wants to reveal that even the righteous can experience suffering, but God's love never disappears in life. In fact, when suffering comes, God comes closer. He loves us when we are weak. His love surrounds and sustains us always. So when we ask, "How does God love me?", remember the testimony of the psalmist, that God answers by listening to your cry, by guiding you away from evil, by protecting you and being present in the midst of the brokenness of your heart. This is unconditional love, which does not always remove the storm for us, but guides us through the storm.
