Creation is always tied to a purpose that has been determined by its creator. As implied in the book of Genesis, a manifesto of faith whose central message is that the entire universe was created by the Almighty God. In the explanation of the creation of man, God ordained man to be created in his image and likeness and to have a specific mandate to manage and realize good stewardship of God's creation.
Those facts of faith are reflected back in this passage. The psalmist remembers and glorifies God who created the universe with all its beauty and order. The psalmist invites the faithful to see the greatness of God precisely through his existence. When compared to the universe including the heavenly bodies of His creation, humans are nothing. However, God has created us in His image and likeness, in more technical terminology known as "imago Dei". In the midst of human limitations, God equips us so that we can carry out his mandate.
What is God's mandate? To master, to manage, to realize good stewardship over animals and plants or in other words other creations of God. The appreciation of God's omnipotence is realized in the human movement to take care of His creation. As the Glorious God manifests His justice and wisdom, so humans are invited to manifest justice to all creation manifested through His wisdom.
Friends of the Bible, let us again remember that our existence in this world is to fulfill His purpose for us. That purpose is revealed in God's initiative to create human beings in His image and likeness, so that we are able to live our lives with His wisdom and manifest justice and good stewardship to our fellow creatures. This realization is based on the following, namely that in the midst of God's magnificent creation, He placed human beings in such a noble position that we are aware of our duties and responsibilities to the rest of creation.
