For the people of Israel, the creed or profession of faith that God is the one and only Lord of Israel has serious and far-reaching consequences for their lives. This confession is not merely a ritual, but also a willingness to place and involve God as the sole ruler of their lives. It is not the will of a human being that prevails and guides, but God’s will alone.
Chapter 44 is a kind of treaty that reminds Israel of God’s eternal and unending journey with His people. Like all other relationships, God’s relationship with His people is also highly dynamic. It begins with a gentle address to Israel. God is like a mother cradling Israel in her womb. He calls Israel by the distinctive name Yeshurun (the faithful one or the beloved one). God then continues His address by reminding Israel that He is the one and only Lord. The idols that exist are false images fashioned from lifeless objects that radiate no holiness whatsoever. These idols are no different from objects made by blacksmiths and carpenters (v. 12). This rebuke against idolatry also serves as a reminder to Israel that their forefathers had once fallen into unfaithfulness towards God, for which they had already received their punishment.
Now Israel is invited to rise from its desolation, for God is the Lord who ever watches over Israel. He will call His people to return home. Those who are scattered will be reunited. That is God’s promise of restoration. It is on this basis that God invites Israel to continue living in hope and to focus on His decrees and will.
May our reflection today serve as a reminder of God’s faithful love for His people. May we live in accordance with the Lord’s decrees and hold fast to His promises as we go through life. Often, in these fast-paced modern times, we forget to live in harmony with and focus on His Word. We are distracted by the ‘idols’ of the modern age that force us to submit and be swept away. May we be granted the strength to always remember and rely on His grace. That is the strength we need to navigate this world full of uncertainty.
