It is a great relief to see others place such trust in us and fight on our behalf. This is all the more so when it happens during the difficult times we are currently experiencing. This is perhaps what our passage today seeks to illustrate. The people of Judah had endured suffering and exile from their ancestral land for so long. In the midst of that distress, the people found strength through what God had promised and was doing. God was actively at work to save His people. 

Verses 1–2 contain God’s promise to restore His people. Jerusalem will be restored. Salvation will be proclaimed, and Jerusalem will shine brightly like a torch. This situation reveals the heart of God, who takes the initiative to restore humanity. He declares His love to His people first. It is because of this light that the nations will see His people. The people’s identity is reaffirmed and they even receive a new identity. As a sign that what the people once did—which brought sorrow—has completely passed away, God is once again pleased with Israel. 

God Himself will guard the city He has re-established. Watchmen are stationed all around the city at all times. If salvation has come and been wrought by God Himself, then the people’s role is to welcome Him wholeheartedly, to build up hope, and to live according to His will. 

Dear Friends of the Bible, how joyful we are when we recall the truth of our faith that, in this life, it is the Lord who plays the greatest role and bears the heaviest burden of every problem we face. Therefore, continue to journey through this world, which is full of various challenges and struggles. Do not give up, no matter what happens in our lives.
