When Our Prayers Have Not Yet Been Answered

Have we ever found ourselves praying constantly for something, yet the situation never seems to change? We have tried to understand, sought help, and waited patiently, but the same questions remain: why is all this happening, and how long must we endure it? In such circumstances, it is not just our hope that begins to wane. We may also start to question God’s presence. If He hears our prayers, why has this suffering not yet come to an end?

Such questions find an echo in Lamentations 5:11–22. After Jerusalem was destroyed by Babylon, the people of Judah faced a reality that shattered almost every aspect of their lives. Violence stripped them of their human dignity; the elders no longer gathered at the city gates; the young lost their joy; and Zion, the centre of their religious life, lay in ruins. This destruction was not merely a matter of losing their homes or social order. For a people who understood their lives in relation to God, the destruction of Jerusalem also shook their belief in His presence and faithfulness. If Zion had fallen silent, where was the God they had always worshipped?

Interestingly, the poet does not stop at this picture of destruction. He declares, “You, O LORD, reign for ever; your throne endures from generation to generation” (v. 19). This affirmation is immediately followed by a seemingly contradictory question: “Why have You forgotten us for ever?” (v. 20). Herein lies the text’s central tension: God is acknowledged to remain enthroned, yet the people feel as though He has forsaken them. They still plead with God to bring them back and renew their days, even though their lament concludes with anxiety over prolonged rejection. They have not yet seen restoration, but still direct their voices to God.

This experience reminds us that suffering does not always come with an adequate explanation. There are times when our faith in God is confronted with realities we find difficult to comprehend. We want to find reasons, to connect cause and effect, or to obtain answers that make the situation feel sensible. Yet, Lamentations does not rush to resolve that tension. This book allows the people’s questions to remain unanswered. It is as though faith not only invites us to walk alongside the things we do not understand, but also gives us the courage to delve into the deepest questions about life and God’s presence without pretending to have found the answers.

Dear Friends of the Bible, if our prayers have not yet been answered, we need not hide our disappointment or force ourselves to always understand God’s ways. The people in Lamentations, too, dared to ask why they seemed to have been forgotten. Yet they continued to cry out to Him whom they acknowledged as reigning for ever. Perhaps we, too, cannot yet see how things will change. We may grieve, lament, and bring our questions before Him. Faith does not guarantee that all answers will come immediately, but we need not face that uncertainty by pretending to be strong. May we, amidst unanswered prayers, find the courage to be honest before God, the willingness to keep seeking Him, and a hope that is not forced, but is sustained amidst the mysteries of life.
