Turn to Allah at once

JEREMIAH 4:1-4

Being betrayed in a relationship is a deeply painful reality of life. The irony is that, whilst we know how painful it is to be betrayed, on other occasions we end up betraying others ourselves. Unfortunately, this also frequently occurs in our relationship with God, as we are reminded by God’s relationship with the people of Israel.

Our passage today opens with very strong words: “...You have committed adultery with many lovers and yet you wish to return to Me?” Adultery is a forbidden act clearly set out in His Ten Commandments. It involves a breach of trust and betrayal between partners who have committed themselves to one another. Here, the act of adultery is used to illustrate Israel’s unfaithfulness in turning away from God and worshipping other gods. They often betrayed God because they felt He was not powerful enough to deliver Israel; this situation occurred in both Israel and Judah. Indeed, Judah refused to learn from what had happened to Israel and did the same.

However, it is interesting to note that amidst all the wickedness committed by Israel, God still offers the possibility of forgiveness and even calls for it wholeheartedly, as seen in verse 12. God promised restoration and His presence through the leadership of His chosen one,  provided Israel was willing to turn back wholeheartedly.  Now God desires a more complete and comprehensive sign—not merely outward circumcision, but a heart circumcised for God. Holiness offered entirely to God alone. Thus, God’s wrath is lifted from Israel.

One thing we learn from this passage is that God’s forgiveness far surpasses His burning wrath. All this happens provided that we truly open our hearts to Him and repent wholeheartedly. We often evade responsibility and justify ourselves for the sins we commit. Yet what He desires is a heart turned towards Him, one that no longer defies His decrees. Let us repent and turn back to God with all our hearts.
