The Jewish people received many laws from God, the purpose of which was to guide them to live in obedience, worship God properly, and do things that were pleasing to Him. However, human limitations often caused them to shift their focus from the main purpose of the law, so that the law became a burden. This phenomenon seemed to block the path to a closer relationship with God.

Jesus, who was born and raised in the Jewish tradition, never ignored even the smallest laws. He also did not simply obey the law as did the scribes and Pharisees, who were often caught up in formalities and did not understand the true will of God. Instead, Jesus fulfilled the law by presenting its essence, namely love and a living relationship with God. In His teachings, Jesus showed that the law was not only intended to prevent sin, but also to direct people to God's deeper intentions. He emphasized that the implementation of the law must be accompanied by sincerity and love. For example, in Matthew 5:20, Jesus said, "Unless your life is more righteous than the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven." This statement underscores the importance of righteousness of heart that transcends formal obedience to the law.

Friends of the Bible, today's text reminds us that there are times when religious life is just a formality because its appreciation only stops at understanding a series of rules that must be obeyed, and not at spirituality which is based on a relationship with God. Even in communities that are considered holy, humans can fall into attitudes that are far from God's intentions. Through the teachings of Jesus Christ, we are invited to know God personally and live a life based on love, not just obedience. In this way, the Torah law is no longer a burden, but becomes a path to a life that is pleasing to God and full of meaning for others.
