Restoration is never an easy process, whether in the context of individuals, communities, or nations. Nehemiah 2:11-20 tells a crucial part of the process of restoring the walls and the city of Jerusalem. This text presents strategies, principles, and responses in facing great challenges. Nehemiah shows exemplary leadership qualities, through all efforts made from preparation to execution.
At the opening of the passage we are shown Nehemiah’s calm and unhurried actions in starting the restoration plan. “After three days there, I got up in the night with only a few men with me” (verses 11-12). He took the time to reflect, listen, and understand the situation as a whole. This was done to understand the context and formulate a plan based on deep understanding, reflecting wisdom and awareness of the importance of strategic steps.
In the silence of the night, Nehemiah made a secret journey to inspect the damage to the walls (Nehemiah 2:13-15). He did not rely solely on reports from others, but chose to conduct a personal investigation to understand the reality before designing a solution. After studying the results of his investigation, Nehemiah invited the leaders of Jerusalem to participate in the process of restoring the wall (Nehemiah 2:17-18). His invitation sentence began with an awareness, "You see the misery we have experienced," showing empathy and solidarity so that they realize the importance of collaboration in achieving common goals. He also shared a testimony of God's presence and the support of the Persian king (Nehemiah 2:18). His testimony gave encouragement and confidence that this project was not just a human effort, but was part of God's plan.
At the end of the passage, it is also conveyed that Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem tried to discourage Nehemiah with taunts and threats (Nehemiah 2:19-20). However, Nehemiah remained firm. He focused his attention on God, the source of his strength, and refused to be intimidated.
Bible friends, Nehemiah is an example of a leader who is filled with wisdom, prayer, and planned action. He did not rush into decisions, because every step he took was a big decision that had an impact on many people. Nehemiah always surrendered completely to God, so that God Himself guided him in mapping out problems carefully and finding the right solution for every challenge he faced. So let us learn from Nehemiah's life example, especially when we face life's struggles. With God's wisdom, we learn to find the best solution through careful planning and do not hesitate to ask for help from others if it is needed.
